British Sugar

British Sugar plc, a subsidiary of Associated British Foods (ABF), is the sole producer of sugar from sugar beet in the UK. Established in 1936 as the British Sugar Corporation through the nationalisation of the UK's sugar beet processing industry, it consolidated 13 separate companies operating 18 factories across the country. The company underwent privatisation in 1981 and was acquired by ABF in 1991.

Today, British Sugar partners with over 2,300 growers to process around eight million tonnes of sugar beet annually, producing up to 1.2 million tonnes of sugar. Its operations are concentrated in four advanced manufacturing plants located in Bury St Edmunds (Suffolk), Cantley (Norfolk), Newark-on-Trent (Nottinghamshire), and Wissington (Norfolk), with Wissington being the largest sugar beet factory in Europe. Beyond sugar production, British Sugar diversifies its operations by generating power and producing bioethanol, animal feed, and other co-products. Notably, the company has also ventured into the cultivation of medicinal cannabis for pharmaceutical purposes.

As part of ABF, British Sugar has committed to achieving science-based decarbonisation targets validated by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi). These targets aim for significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and to reach Net Zero emissions by 2050. British Sugar's environmental policy emphasises minimising energy use and implementing responsible energy purchasing. British Sugar is dedicated to managing its energy needs through a combination of efficiency improvements, renewable energy generation, and strategic policy commitments.

To help enable these energy initiatives, Wilson Power Solutions supplied British Sugar with eleven distribution transformers, which provide reliability and security of power supply. The latest transformers feature superior efficiency levels, aligning with the company's environmental commitment to reducing energy use. The transformers are installed at the Bury St Edmunds, Bardney and Newark factories for operations expansion projects or replacement of old, inefficient transformers to reduce carbon, energy and financial losses.
