Food and Beverage

Transformer solutions to tackle industry challenges

The food and beverage industry is responsible for approximately 30% of global energy usage. It has specific power distribution and supply needs to ensure efficient and safe operation. These needs can vary depending on the size, type, and processes involved in the production process, as well as meeting the requirements of regulatory bodies.

Reliable power supply is non-negotiable in production, meaning resilience against extreme weather events and grid disruptions is becoming increasingly important. When designing on-site power distribution systems, it is essential to account for current decarbonisation needs. These include electrifying manufacturing processes, installing EV charging points for trucks and distribution networks, adopting heat pumps for heating, and expanding co-generation systems like on-site solar, wind or battery storage installations.

The food and beverage sector is amongst the most competitive industries in the world, with close financial control imperative to success. Our engineers are highly trained, experienced professionals who will work with you to provide reliable power engineering solutions designed to keep your site running smoothly while reducing the cost and environmental impact of your operations.

Tackling energy waste

Most food and beverage organisations have ambitious decarbonisation targets, with electrification being one of the biggest opportunities to reduce emissions. This includes electrifying operations, heat and transport, which amplifies the importance of power supply and its efficiency and reliability.

One area that many food and beverage companies overlook is running old energy-guzzling transformers. Most energy waste happens through transformers before the energy enters the building. Replacing old transformers with Wilson e4 Ultimate Low Loss Amorphous® Transformer, the most efficient transformer in Europe, can help reduce energy, carbon and financial waste. Wilson e4 offers 27% lower energy losses compared to the industry standard, Tier 2 Ecodesign requirements, making it a no-brainer for an upgrade, even for a new build site.

Addressing Voltage Fluctuations

Standard transformers are equipped with De-Energised Tap Changers (DETC) to allow easy adjustment to LV site voltage without the need for costly additional equipment. This is ideal for sites where there is no need to frequently change the voltage tapping as it requires de-energising the transformer. The DETC switch can be turned manually to adjust the secondary voltage.

However, some sites use machinery such as motors, ovens, refrigerators, and packaging machines along with co-located renewable energy, which can amplify issues such as voltage sags and swells, where disruption can result in significant financial losses. Wilson e4+ Ultimate Low Loss Amorphous® Transformer with On-Load Tap Changer (OLTC) allows for automatic voltage regulation without the need to de-energise the transformer. Voltage tap positions and gaps can be fully customisable to maintain a constant secondary voltage regardless of irregular supply patterns, including random peaks and troughs.
