Retail & Supermarkets

Aligning with commitments to achieve Net Zero

The UK grocery market is set to grow by 11.3% – from £216.8bn to £241.3bn – between 2022 and 2027. However, due to competition, the growth of online consumer preferences, and fuel costs, major grocers have reported a decline in revenue. In a sector where supply chain costs greatly influence the end consumer prices, it is important to consider the role of energy distribution and how improvements can impact profitability.

The retail sector in the UK contributed over £111bn to the UK's economy, amounting to 4.5% of the total economic output. Retail faces growing pressure to reduce energy costs, lower carbon emissions, and meet ambitious Net Zero targets. With extended operating hours, refrigeration demands, and high electricity consumption, these businesses require energy solutions that balance efficiency, sustainability, and reliability.

Ensuring a dependable and steady source of electricity is crucial for the continuous operation of the retail and supermarket markets. This becomes more prevalent with decarbonisation initiatives such as the electrification of heat, replacing ICE vehicles with electric vehicles and the integration of renewables and battery energy storage.

Transformers play a vital role in the decarbonisation of retail and supermarkets. Solutions vary from replacing old energy-guzzling transformers with state-of-the-art efficient ones to introducing transformers with voltage regulation capabilities to reduce the impact of grid fluctuations.

Climate Action Roadmap

According to The British Retail Consortium (BRC), UK retail market is the major contributor to CO2 emissions. BRC's Climate Action Roadmap lays out ambitious targets for the retail industry to achieve Net Zero in the supply chain, direct operations and products sold by 2040. Nearly one third of household emissions in the UK are attributed to the products we buy, emphasising the importance of this goal, ahead of the government's 2050 Net Zero targets.

The roadmap sets our five pathways, three of which are linked to transformers; 1. placing GHG data at the core of business decision, 2. operating efficient sites powered by renewables energy and 3. moving to low carbon logistics. Transformers are essential in connecting renewable energy and EV charging infrastructure to the grid. This has seen an uptake in recent years with both shops and distribution centres aspiring to become more resilient.

We offer the UK's most energy efficient distribution transformer, Wilson e4 Ultimate Low Loss Amorphous® which offers 27% lower energy losses when compared to Tier 2 Ecodesign regulation. Opting for a Wilson e4, either when adding a new transformer or replacing an old one, results in significant carbon, energy and financial savings, essential to accelerating decarbonisation.

Similarly, our Wilson e4+ Ultimate Low Loss Amorphous® Transformer with OLTC maintains a constant secondary voltage despite supply fluctuations. This reduces over-voltage and under-voltage events to minimise disruptions whilst reducing energy waste.
