Onshore Wind Farm expansion

Crystal Rig Wind Farm, located near Berwick-upon-Tweed in Scotland, is one of the United Kingdom’s largest onshore wind farms. Owned and operated by Fred Olsen Renewables, the site has undergone several phases of expansion since 2003 to meet the country’s growing demand for renewable energy. By 2025, the site has 102 turbines, delivering over 260 megawatts of clean electricity capable of powering approximately 200,000 homes.

Scope of Work	40/60MVA 132/33kV Wilson Power Transformer

To support this project, Wilson Power Solutions supplied a 40/60MVA 132/33kV ONAN/ONAF Wilson Power Transformer designed and built to IEC 60076 standards. The transformer includes a range of ancillaries such as advanced monitoring equipment, an oil-filled conservator, and anti-vibration pads designed to reduce operational noise.

The customer also opted for a Factory Acceptance Test, during which IEC routine tests were witnessed and verified before shipment. Following delivery, our site services team installed the transformer with MR OLTC and prepared it for commissioning by the site operator, Fred Olsen Renewables.

The new grid transformer connects Crystal Rig to the DNO grid, allowing for maximum generation periods. Plans are already in place to add approximately 72 megawatts of wind capacity and 27 megawatts of solar generation. The combined development will deliver a community benefit package valued at £360,000 per year, equating to £12.6 million over 35 years. It will generate enough clean energy to power the equivalent of 83,000 average Scottish households.
