wilson e3 ultra-low loss amorphous transformer for gatwick airport EV charging forecourt

Electric Forecourt® at Gatwick Airport

Gatwick Airport (LGW) is the second busiest airport in the UK, after Heathrow, and one of the busiest in Europe. It is located about 30 miles (48 km) south of Central London. Gatwick was originally an airfield in the 1930s and became a commercial airport in 1958. It is the world’s busiest single-runway airport, handling around 40-46 million passengers annually. Gatwick Airport partnered with GRIDSERVE to build an Electric Forecourt® EV charging station to improve its transport links and service its EV-driving customers.

Charging is now available at the London Gatwick Electric Forecourt® through 30 electric vehicle chargers supplied by 100% Net Zero carbon energy. The forecourt is pedestrian-friendly and fully accessible with a new retail building. Transformers from Wilson Power Solutions Ltd will help London Gatwick Airport on its journey to reach Net Zero by 2030.

Scope of Work

Wilson e3 Ultra Low Loss Amorphous® Transformers (two 33kV/415V 2.5MVA and two 33kV/615V 3MVA)

To facilitate convenient EV charging for customers, Gatwick Electric Forecourt® is equipped with both CCS and CHAdeMO connectors. It accepts contactless payments and offers real-time status updates on widely used EV charging maps. These chargers operate on Net Zero carbon energy, aligning with GRIDSERVE’s commitment to combating climate change and promoting electric vehicle adoption.

Two custom-built 3MVA 33kV/615V and two 2.5MVA 33kV/415V amorphous transformers were installed, along with various ancillary components, including a pressure relief device (PRD), a pressure vacuum gauge, and an Ashridge digital OTI and WTI for better transformer maintenance. Additionally, the transformers are housed in stainless steel bunds capable of containing 110% of their oil volume, ensuring environmental protection. Structural steel frames were constructed to support an LV feeder pillar with 18 supply bays. To reduce noise, the transformers were fitted with anti-vibration pads.
