The UK's first fully Electric Forecourt®

The GRIDSERVE Electric Forecourt® in Braintree, Essex, is the UK’s first purpose-built electric vehicle (EV) charging station, designed to provide ultra-fast, convenient, and sustainable charging for electric vehicles. It opened in December 2020 and is a model for future EV charging hubs across the country. Braintree has a modern lounge-style waiting area with free Wi-Fi, workspaces, and comfortable seating. It houses shops & cafés, including Costa Coffee, WHSmith, and a Little Fresh convenience store.

Powered by solar energy from GRIDSERVE’s solar farms and battery storage, making it one of the most sustainable charging hubs in the UK. Braintree showcases high-powered EV charging with 36 ultra-rapid chargers, capable of delivering up to 350kW, allowing some EVs to charge from 10-80% in as little as 20 minutes. The chargers are compatible with all EV brands and use CCS, CHAdeMO, and Type 2 connectors. Reducing operating costs whilst cutting carbon emissions and offering a world-class customer experience is vital for EV charging providers. GRIDSERVE achieves this at its Braintree Forecourt® by installing our low-loss amorphous transformers.

Scope of Work

Two 33kV/415V 3MVA Wilson e3 Ultra Low Loss Amorphous® Transformers

Constantly looking to invest in innovative, low-carbon technology, GRIDSERVE installed two 3000kVA Wilson e3 Ultra Low Loss Amorphous® Transformers at their Braintree Forecourt. Featuring 350 kW Ultra Rapid Charging points, the station can charge up to 24 EVs and 6 Tesla superchargers simultaneously. Our transformers save GRIDSERVE 1,625MWh over 30 years of operations. This equates to £243k and 375tCO2 emissions reduction. This would be enough to provide 4,590,525 EV miles (extra charging at zero emissions). The savings are achieved because GRIDSERVE upgraded from the market standard transformer (Ecodesign Tier 1 losses) to an Ultra Low Loss transformer.

Amorphous transformers are just one example of a decarbonisation measure for EV charging infrastructures. The road to Net Zero is not straightforward, and every technological breakthrough needs to be part of the conversation. One-third of the global GHG emissions come from energy, and if we add transportation to that, it becomes half of the global GHG emissions. Reducing the footprint of these two sectors should be on the table of every decision-making conversation.
