120MW/360MWh Iron Acton BESS

Located in South Gloucestershire near Bristol, the 120MW/360MWh Iron Acton Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), owned by Constantine Energy Storage (CES), connects to the national transmission network at the adjacent Iron Acton 132kV Grid Supply Point, where around 120MW of solar and wind generation is already connected.

Wilson Power Solutions supplied, installed and tested both the grid-connection transformer and the distribution MV transformers for the project, building on our previous work at the site by supplying the power transformer for the neighbouring solar farm.

Scope of Work	110/125/140MVA 132/33kV Wilson Power Transformer Three 1700kVA 33kV/415V Wilson T2 Ecotrans® Distribution Transformers

At the heart of the connection is a 110/125/140MVA 132/33kV Wilson Power Transformer, the unit linking the site’s 33kV system to the 132kV transmission grid. Rated up to 140MVA, the grid transformer is fitted with an on-load tap changer, which is essential for voltage regulation under live load and holding a stable connection as battery output varies. This is a Continuous Rating Transformer (CMR), and it can operate at the 140MVA power load safely and constantly without overheating or exceeding its temperature limits.

After transport to site, our engineers supervised the offloading, site assembly and oil filling, with installation. The transformer was then fully tested before full acceptance testing and handover to the client.

Alongside the grid transformer, we supplied three 1700kVA 33kV/415V Wilson T2 Ecotrans® Distribution Transformers. Each MV transformer was filled with FR3 natural ester fluid, a renewable, biodegradable alternative to mineral oil with a higher flash point for enhanced on-site fire safety, and supplied with a 110% steel bund, suited to the demands of an outdoor battery site.

As originally consented, the Iron Acton site is expected to displace around 18,300 tonnes of CO2 each year, equivalent to taking roughly 13,000 cars off the road, alongside a biodiversity plan delivering a net gain in habitat and hedgerow units across the 2.3-hectare site
