100MW/200MWh UK's largest transmission-connected BESS

Lakeside Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is a significant energy storage facility located near Drax in North Yorkshire, England. Developed and fully owned by TagEnergy, the project became operational in October 2024 and is recognised as the UK's largest transmission-connected battery storage system at the time.

The facility boasts a capacity of 100MW/200MWh, enabling it to store surplus electricity generated during periods of low demand and release it back into the grid during peak demand, thereby enhancing grid stability and supporting the integration of renewable energy sources.

Lakeside BESS utilises 54 Tesla Megapack 2XL lithium-ion batteries, supplied by Tesla, which also served as the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for the project. The system is optimised using Tesla's Autobidder AI software, which analyses real-time data on energy demand, grid conditions, and electricity prices to efficiently manage electricity storage and dispatch.

Wilson Power Solutions supplied Lakeside with the full scope of transformers, from grid and MV to auxiliary and earthing transformers. Twenty-seven 4200kVA 33kV/480-480V Wilson T2 Ecotrans® Transformers are connected to fifty-four Tesla megapacks. The MV transformers connect to an 80/106MVA 132/33kV Wilson Power Transformer. The site's balance of plants is powered by a 150kVA 33kV/415V Auxiliary Earthing Transformer, which provides earthing protection.

The bespoke-built Wilson T2 Ecotrans® large distribution transformers were specifically engineered to work seamlessly with Tesla Megapacks, featuring dual LV, and are fully compliant with EU Ecodesign Tier 2 transformer loss regulation. The transformers are also equipped with a range of ancillaries, including an oil temperature indicator, pressure relief devices and a steel bund designed to contain 110% of the transformer’s oil volume for enhanced safety.
