Scope of Work

Six 1600kVA Wilson e3 Ultra-Low Loss Amorphous® Transformers

In 2020, Lancaster University declared a climate emergency and set an ambitious target to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2035. A major step toward this goal was the creation of a Net Zero Energy Centre. The project received £21 million in funding from the Government’s Green Heat Network Fund (GHNF), which the university matched to deliver a £40 million facility that will reduce reliance on gas by 90 per cent.

This initiative builds on an already strong energy infrastructure. The university currently generates between 4 and 5 million kWh of electricity annually from on-site wind turbines and is developing an 11MW solar PV farm. Once completed, the solar installation is expected to produce 10GWh of electricity each year and displace around 2,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.

To help realise these ambitious decarbonisation plans, the University decided to replace old and inefficient transformers. We supplied six 1.6MVA 11kV/415V Wilson e3 Ultra-Low Loss Amorphous® Transformers. At the time of installation, these were the most efficient transformers available on the market (now surpassed by the Wilson e4 Ultimate Low Loss Amorphous® Transformer). The delivery included HIAB off-loading onto prepared plinths, with installation overseen by Lymington Projects (previously LPL) in collaboration with the CIS installation team.

By selecting the most efficient transformers for this critical infrastructure, Lancaster University has reinforced its commitment to sustainability and enhanced energy resilience across the education sector.
