Proactive approach to sustainability

Ninewells Hospital is a large teaching hospital located in Dundee, Scotland. It is one of the largest hospitals in the region and is part of NHS Tayside. Ninewells is renowned for its medical research, specialist treatments, and high-quality patient care. It is also a key centre for medical education, training healthcare professionals, and conducting cutting-edge research, including introducing laparoscopic surgery to the UK.

Like many public-sector organisations, the age of NHS Tayside’s hospitals presents a greater challenge when meeting tough carbon emission targets. Justifying investment in new assets and energy-saving technology must demonstrate a return on investment and improvements to the healthcare service. NHS Tayside’s proactive approach to sustainability ensures decision makers have an informed understanding of where and how to invest.

Having attended a CPD seminar on energy savings through supply transformers in 2015, Robert Harvie (Senior Estates Manager, NHS Tayside) became aware of energy savings opportunities that might be realised at Ninewells Hospital and arranged for a follow-up seminar for the estates and engineering team in 2016.

From there, Ninewells Hospital undertook an energy study of the existing transformers' consumption rate to establish the real potential for energy and carbon savings. The results concluded that by replacing just one old inefficient high voltage transformer (the existing 11kV/433V unit from 1967 with an 11kV/415V Wilson e2 amorphous transformer of the same capacity), the combined energy savings of approximately 61000 kWh per annum would be realised.

Since then, NHS Tayside has taken a proactive approach to sustainability, ensuring it upgrades the high voltage assets at the Ninewells Hospital to state-of-the-art, low-loss amorphous transformers. The hospital has installed a total of ten transformers, adding financial savings to its bottomline while reducing energy waste and carbon emissions.

NHS Scotland Sustainability Ambitions

NHS Scotland declared a climate emergency and committed to becoming Net Zero by 2045, which is aligned with Scotland's national target for Net Zero emissions across all sectors, including efforts to reduce carbon emissions, increase sustainability, and improve energy efficiency across the health sector. One of the key initiatives is NHS Scotland's Energy Efficiency Program, which has made significant investments in improving energy efficiency across NHS Scotland facilities, including the use of low-carbon technologies and sustainable building practices. Despite the positive steps NHS Scotland has taken, there are challenges in achieving its net-zero goals. Due to its complexity and reliance on energy-intensive services, the healthcare sector will need ongoing innovation, investment, and collaboration to reduce its emissions. However, NHS Scotland remains committed to continuous sustainability and environmental responsibility progress.
