solar panels at solar farm cambridgeshire

North Angle Solar Park

Cambridgeshire County Council has developed a 30-megawatt (MW) solar farm at North Angle Farm in Soham, as part of its commitment to achieving Net Zero carbon emissions for the region by 2050. This initiative aims to produce renewable energy while generating revenue to support essential frontline services, such as adult social care. The solar farm occupies approximately 188 acres of the Mere Farm Estate, adjacent to the existing 12MW Triangle Farm solar park, which has been operational since 2016. The Triangle Farm project has demonstrated success, generating clean energy and delivering over £350,000 per annum in net revenue to support council services.

The North Angle Solar Park is expected to generate nearly the same amount of electricity as used by 12,000 households annually, offsetting more than 90,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions over its lifetime. The site was selected due to its flat, relatively remote terrain, standard agricultural land quality, and proximity to grid connection options.

To ensure performance, the project will be executed under an Energy Performance Contract (EPC) with Bouygues Energies & Services. This arrangement guarantees the volume of electricity generated, with financial safeguards in place if targets are not met. Revenue from electricity sales and grid services will be reinvested into maintaining and enhancing frontline services. In addition to its environmental and economic benefits, the project includes plans to enhance local biodiversity. Measures such as planting wildflowers around the solar panels, installing bat, bee, and bird boxes, and allowing grazing beneath the elevated panels are intended to support wildlife and improve soil health.

We supported the site through Aprenda by delivering Tier 2 compliant 315kVA and 2500kVA 33kV/433V Wilson T2 Ecotrans® Transformers close-coupled with 630A and 4000A LV cabinets, respectively. We also supplied a 100kVA auxiliary and earthing transformer for extra protection and to power the site's ancillary services.
