Wilson t2 ecotrans distribution transformer at thermal hydrolysis plant

Severn Trent Water

Finham Sewage Treatment Works (STW), located near Coventry in the West Midlands, is Severn Trent's fifth-largest wastewater treatment facility, processing over 115 megalitres of effluent daily from approximately 500,000 residents. The site manages both indigenous sludge and imports from regional sewage works, producing final effluent, dewatered sludge ('cake'), and biogas. Finham STW underwent a £35 million upgrade to implement Advanced Anaerobic Digestion (AAD) technology. This project aimed to enhance biogas production and improve the quality of biosolids for land application. The AAD process includes a Thermal Hydrolysis Plant (THP), which uses steam from two gas boilers to hydrolyse sludge from primary settlement tanks, the activated sludge plant, and imported sources. This hydrolysis increases gas yield during digestion, boosting the gas-to-grid throughput.

Scope of Work

  • 2000kVA 11kV/415V Wilson Wilson e3 Ultra Low Loss Amorphous® Transformer close-coupled with RN2d and a 3200A LV Cabinet

  • 2500kVA 11.5kV/415V Wilson Wilson e3 Ultra Low Loss Amorphous® Transformer close-coupled with a 4000A LV Cabinet

The project also introduced a gas-to-grid (G2G) system, enabling the conversion of biogas into biomethane for injection into the national gas network. This system includes six boosters—three transferring biogas from digesters to a gas holder at 15-25 mBar and three supplying biogas to boilers. The initiative has the capacity to provide renewable gas to approximately 9,000 households, contributing to decarbonisation efforts.

THP is a facility that processes sewage sludge or other organic waste using high-pressure steam and heat to break down complex organic materials before anaerobic digestion. This process makes the sludge more biodegradable, improves biogas production, and reduces residual waste volume. THP is a pre-treatment process used before anaerobic digestion, a method of wastewater treatment that uses microorganisms to break down organic matter in the absence of oxygen. We supported the project with a few transformers, including 2MVA 11kV/415V and 2.5MVA 11.5kV/415V Wilson e3 Ultra Low Loss Amorphous® Transformers.
