Tesco Harrogate Low Carbon Concept Store

Tesco has unveiled a new low-carbon concept store in Harrogate in December 2025. The new supermarket is a part of a wider plan to achieve carbon neutrality across its operations by 2035, developing more sustainable supply chains, reducing packaging, protecting biodiversity and creating positive community impact.

The 3,651m² store incorporates a range of passive and active energy measures, including natural daylighting, energy-efficient lighting and heat recovery systems. From its timber frame and recycled concrete slab to the rooftop solar panels expected to generate around 20% of the store’s electricity demand, the building has been designed to demonstrate the future of low-carbon retail construction in the UK. Overall, the store is expected to reduce carbon emissions by around 50% and cut energy consumption by up to 41% compared with current building standards (Part L2A 2013 Building Regulations).

The new Tesco store is an ideal application for Wilson’s award-winning energy-efficient transformer technology. As part of the store’s electrical infrastructure strategy, the installation of a Wilson distribution transformer helps further improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. These advanced transformers utilise amorphous core technology, reducing energy losses by up to 27% compared with the current Ecodesign Tier 2 regulation. By significantly lowering both no-load and load losses, Wilson high-efficiency transformers ensure less energy is wasted as heat and more is delivered where it is needed, supporting the store’s overall low-carbon performance.
