Cancer treatment centre

The Christie NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK's leading cancer treatment centres, based in Manchester, England. It is widely recognised for its advanced cancer care, cutting-edge treatments, and role in cancer research and education. The hospital serves not only the local population of Manchester but also patients from across the UK and internationally. It is part of the NHS Foundation Trust network, and its primary mission is to provide excellent care, innovation, and education in the field of oncology.

The Christie NHS Foundation Trust embraced the NHS climate change strategy and is actively working towards reducing its carbon footprint. One key aspect of The Christie’s Net Zero commitment is making its buildings more energy-efficient, including using energy-saving technologies such as upgrading the HV network and replacing old transformers.

Having provided the UK with its first high-energy proton beam therapy service, the Christie NHS Trust requires an incredibly durable power supply that maximises resource use. To accommodate this revolutionary technology, the hospital opted to install four 2MVA, one 1MVA, and two 1600kVA transformers. All the transformers were the most energy efficient in the market at the time, in line with the hospital's sustainability commitments to reduce energy waste and carbon emissions. We designed the transformers with 6.6kV bespoke voltages to connect to the ENW DNO.
