Thurrock BESS Wilson Auxilliary Earthing Transformers

Protecting the UK's largest BESS at the time

Located at the Tilbury substation in Essex, the 300MW/600MWh Thurrock Storage Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) became the largest operational battery storage site in the UK when it was energised in August 2025, with three times the energy storage capacity of the next largest project at the time. Developed by Statera Energy and connected to the National Grid transmission network, it forms one half of Thurrock Flexible Generation, co-locating the battery storage with Thurrock Power, a 450MW flexible generation plant that completed the first firing of its engines in May 2026.

Together, the two sites will offer 750MW of flexible capacity and 600MWh of storage, with the battery handling instant, short-duration balancing while the generation plant covers extended periods of low renewable output. Wilson Power Solutions supplied the earthing transformers that protect the battery site.

A battery site of this scale depends on equipment that performs reliably when a fault occurs on the network. Our nine transformers provide the neutral earth reference for the site's 15kV system and protect it during short-circuit events. We supplied 33kV Wilson Earthing Transformer, four 15kV Wilson Earthing Transformers, each rated to withstand 1000A for 10 seconds, along with two 250kVA 15kV/415V, and two 500kVA 33kVA/415V Wilson Auxiliary Earthing Transformers, which combine the earthing function with an auxiliary supply for the site's own power requirements.

Once fully operational, the combined Thurrock Flexible Generation facilities will support electricity demand equivalent to that of up to 2.4 million homes, transforming a former fossil fuel site into one of the UK's significant clean energy assets.
