University Hospital of South Manchester

The University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust (UHSM) was an NHS foundation trust that operated Wythenshawe Hospital, a major acute teaching hospital in Wythenshawe, South Manchester, England. On October 1, 2017, UHSM merged with Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to form Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT).

The University Hospital of South Manchester was recognised as the “greenest” hospital in the UK and was acknowledged as the most environmentally friendly in Europe. After starting many energy-saving initiatives, the hospital was looking for additional areas that could drive energy savings. They identified super low-loss amorphous transformers as a highly cost-effective infrastructure upgrade that would provide guaranteed energy savings through reduced transformer losses and deliver substantial additional savings through inbuilt voltage management capabilities. The trust sourced two replacement supply transformers with voltage regulation for extra savings.

Wilson e2 Super Low Loss Amorphous Transformers were installed, and a Load Survey was conducted to quantify the energy savings. Power analysing monitoring equipment was connected at each main incoming LV supply and left in situ for 17 days. The measurements taken before installation and those with the Wilson e2 transformer on Tap 3 show a 5.9% and 6.0% reduction in kWh, respectively.

Lower energy waste and reduction in voltage improved the site’s power factor and provided a long-term improvement with payback within 3 years. Overall, the Wilson e2 has helped UHMS save money and energy and reduce its carbon footprint.
