Supporting the university-owned 11kV network

The University of East Anglia (UEA) is a highly regarded public research university in Norwich, England. Established in 1963 with teaching space for nearly 1,200 students, the university is home to over 17,000 students today. Ranking among the top 25 universities in the UK and 200 worldwide, UEA has been known for its strong academic reputation, particularly in environmental sciences and climate change research, for the past 50 years.

UEA Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research outlined the university's Net Zero targets to become 80% Net Zero by 2030 and 100% by 2045, with a pledge not to rely on offsetting carbon emissions. These ambitious goals could only be achieved by a wide range of initiatives, including investigating overlooked energy efficiency potential in electrical networks such as transformers.

  • Wilson e3 Ultra Low Loss Amorphous® Transformers (500kVA, 800kVA and 1000kVA)

  • Wilson e2 Super Low Loss Amorphous® Transformers (1000kVA and 12500kVA)

UEA's engineering, utilities and maintenance teams included low-loss amorphous transformers in their design guides for the superior energy, carbon and energy savings they offer. Transformers are a low-hanging fruit for decarbonisation, with one infrastructure decision to swap an old transformer or upgrade to the most energy-efficient one in Europe, which could add hundreds of thousands of pounds to the university's bottomline while mitigating hundreds of tons of carbon emissions. After specifying low-loss transformers, the university installed eight amorphous transformers for new buildings and replacement projects. Below are images from the old 1000kVA South Wales Switchgear transformer from 1960 and a new 1000kVA Wilson e2 transformer in the Barton & Hickling Residence Substation.
