University of Glasgow

The University of Glasgow is one of the most prestigious universities in the UK and one of the oldest in the world. Located in Glasgow, Scotland, it was founded in 1451, making it the fourth-oldest university in the English-speaking world. The university has a large and diverse estate, with over 200 buildings across several campuses. The main campus, located in the West End of Glasgow, contains the majority of these buildings, including academic, research, residential, and recreational facilities. Each building serves a unique purpose, and some are historical landmarks, while others are modern, sustainable constructions.

As part of its response to the climate emergency, the University of Glasgow has one of the most ambitious decarbonisation pledges amongst universities, with an aspiration to go 'further and faster' to reach Net Zero by 2030. One of its five key climate actions is to promote energy efficiency through improvements across operations and assets. The engineering team identified transformer replacement as having significant decarbonisation potential.

Future-proofing the institution and staying true to this commitment, the university launched their asset replacement programme, with the project being awarded to Labron Technical Ltd. After assessing their needs, Labron Technical selected the Wilson e3 Ultra Low Loss Amorphous® Transformer which go beyond current Tier 2 Ecodesign regulation for transformer losses, offering further energy, carbon and financial savings over their lifetime, and advancing the decarbonisation plans for the university. The university replaced 13 old energy-guzzling transformers with efficient alternatives through that programme.

Historically, the university installed at least nine other transformers from Wilson Power Solutions, with a selection of CRGO and amorphous metal cores, the majority of which were low-loss transformers.
