Introducing Wilson e4 Ultimate Low Loss Amorphous® Transformer
Wilson Power Solutions is delighted to launch a brand new distribution transformer, Wilson e4 Ultimate Low Loss Amorphous® Transformer, the most energy-efficient transformer in the UK and Europe.
Energy Losses
As a UK power and distribution transformer manufacturer, we always look for solutions to limit energy waste by improving our own products’ efficiency. Even though our distribution transformers exceed the current Tier 2 Ecodesign requirements, we aspire to improve efficiency even further to provide the market with maximum energy and carbon savings.
Losses within the electrical networks contribute to 1.5% of the United Kingdom’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with distribution transformer inefficiencies alone responsible for 25% of these emissions. Recognising the impact of outdated transformer designs and their associated losses, Ecodesign regulations were implemented to reduce energy wastage in transformers.
Step into Decarbonisation
We have always aimed to offer a more efficient solution to the energy market, dwelling further into optimising and beating our records. Our journey has taken us from the Wilson e2 Super Low Loss Amorphous® Transformer to the Wilson e3 Ultra Low Loss Amorphous® Transformer and now advanced technologically towards the all-new generation Wilson e4 Ultimate Low Loss Amorphous® Transformers. See below a payback calculation of 1MVA Wilson e4 compared to a 1970s transformer.
Wilson e4 has lower combined losses to the extent
that it not only surpasses the UK Tier 2 regulatory standards by 27%
but also sets a new benchmark for the standards to come (including Tier 3 & Tier 4).
This makes our Wilson e4 transformer, the most energy-efficient solution in Europe.
What makes Wilson e4 Ultimate Low Loss Amorphous® Transformer the most efficient transformer in the UK
The transformer meets and exceeds Ecodesign Tier 2 (2021) specifications with the lowest combined Load and No-Load Losses in the market resulting in 27% lower combined losses compared to Ecodesign Tier 2 requirements. It offers unmatched carbon and energy savings combined with a highly beneficial total cost of ownership of up to £370k lifetime savings when replacing an existing 1990s transformer.
The traditional transformer core is made of Cold Rolled Grain Oriented Silicon Steel (CRGO) which has reached its full potential making it difficult to further reduce the losses without incurring significantly higher costs. Wilson e4’s core is made of Amorphous metals that have a random molecular structure which reduces friction during the magnetisation and demagnetisation of the core resulting in less heat dissipation which boosts the transformer’s overall efficiency.
Our award-winning transformer technology has 15 years of proven tracks
with more than 2000 installations with no failures.
This is why we are confident in the quality giving a 24-month industry-leading guarantee.
Market sectors
Wilson e4 Ultimate Low Loss Amorphous® Transformer is a great choice for key market sectors keen on reducing their energy consumption and limiting their carbon footprint including industrial, supermarkets, retail, education, healthcare, food & beverage, water, renewables, MOD, ports, EV and many more.
Replacing Old Transformers
Despite durable design capabilities allowing transformers to live much longer than anticipated, existing transformer assets have a significant role to play in improving efficiency across the network. Conventionally, the older the transformer, the more energy waste it produces.
When conducting a life cycle cost analysis associated with replacing old transformers with the new Wilson e4 Ultimate Low loss, it is important to understand that the benefit goes beyond the financial feasibility extending to environmental and carbon reduction and reliability advantages.
Looking at the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), on average 95% of the carbon emissions happen during the operational and maintenance phase of the transformer. Hence, the energy efficiency of the transformer design is paramount to decarbonisation.
Technical specification
Wilson e4 Ultimate Low Loss Amorphous® Transformers come with a range of ratings from 315-2000kVA. Our advanced amorphous technology means transformers with a rating up to 1250kVA don’t need radiators as the tank can sufficiently dissipate the heat. Transformers with ratings 1500kVA-2000kVA have radiators only on one side.
Wilson e4 can be ONAN or KNAN oil-filled with synthetic or natural ester. Primary voltage 11kV is standard and we offer customisation options such as 3.3kV, 6.6kV, 11-6.6kV dual, and 33kV. Secondary standard voltage has rating of 415V with customisation of 280V, 400V, 433V, 480V, 690V. The transformer is fitted with a standard de-energised tap changer and upon request, we can replace it with an on-load tap changer for Wilson e4+ alternative. All transformers are built to BS 2562 and IEC 60076 standards and come with a choice of optional ancillaries.
