Innovating sustainable aircraft and space technology

Airbus is a multinational aerospace corporation headquartered in France. It is known for designing, manufacturing, and selling commercial aircraft, helicopters, military transport planes, and space-related systems. Airbus is also involved in defense and space technologies, producing military aircraft like the A400M and satellites through its Airbus Defence and Space division.

In the UK, Airbus has several major manufacturing and research sites that contribute to the design and production of aircraft components. One of the most significant facilities is in Broughton, Wales, where Airbus manufactures wings for all its commercial aircraft, including the A320, A350, and A380. Another key site is in Filton, near Bristol, where Airbus focuses on wing design, landing gear integration, fuel systems, and aerodynamics research. Filton also plays a role in the development of new technologies, such as composite materials and sustainable aviation solutions.

Beyond these primary locations, Airbus also has operations in Portsmouth and Stevenage, where it works on space and defense projects. The Stevenage site specialises in satellite manufacturing and space exploration technology, contributing to missions such as the ExoMars rover. The Portsmouth site is a leader in secure communications and defense-related satellite systems. These UK sites are integral to Airbus' overall business, helping the company maintain its position as a leader in the aerospace industry while driving forward innovation in both aviation and space exploration.

Airbus firmly commits to sustainability, aiming to reduce its environmental impact across all operations. A key part of this strategy involves developing next-generation aircraft that use cleaner energy sources, including hydrogen-powered aircraft, which Airbus plans to introduce by 2035 under its ZEROe program. The company also invests in sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), lightweight materials, and more efficient aircraft designs to reduce emissions.

Airbus is working to make its manufacturing processes more energy-efficient to further its sustainability efforts. The company is increasing its use of renewable energy sources across its production sites, with facilities in the UK and Europe incorporating solar panels, wind energy, and energy-efficient technologies, such as Wilson Power Solutions Transformers, to lower their carbon footprint.

We supplied key Airbus sites in the UK with multiple distribution transformers to facilitate the high energy demand for its manufacturing processes and supporting facilities. Some of these transformers exhibit superior efficiency levels, helping Airbus reduce its carbon emissions and energy waste. We also supplied Airbus with custom-designed and built welding transformers used in arc welding or resistance welding to convert high-voltage, low-current electricity from the power source into low-voltage, high-current electricity suitable for welding.
