The Drakelow Energy from Waste (EfW) plant, located near Burton upon Trent in South Derbyshire, is a significant development in the UK's renewable energy sector. Constructed on the former Drakelow coal-fired power station site, this facility is designed to process approximately 169,000 tonnes of non-recyclable Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) annually, diverting waste from landfills and contributing to sustainable waste management.
Developed, owned, and operated by Vital Energi, the Energy from Waste (EfW) plant utilises advanced gasification technology. This process involves combusting RDF to produce syngas, which is then used to generate steam. The steam drives an 18 MWe steam turbine, producing low-carbon electricity sufficient to power approximately 14,000 homes.
